1. The decision to refer a patient to a public hospital non-admitted service must be made with the consent/approval of the patient or their representative.
  2. Referrals that meet these referral criteria will be accepted by public hospitals in Victoria.
  3. Meeting the minimum referral criteria does not guarantee priority access.
  4. Where appropriate and available the referral may be directed to an alternative specialist clinic or service.
  5. The referral criteria for each condition reflect contemporary practice at the time of publication but may not be current at the time of viewing.
  6. This is not an exhaustive list of all conditions that may be referred to public hospitals.
  7. A referral that does not meet the criteria may be made for patients with extenuating circumstances. This should be documented on the referral form and will be assessed by the receiving health service.
